With all of the hundreds of email's that our resident Hair Doctor receives, the most frequently asked question is:

"Which product should I use to get my hair to do what I want it to?"

This is really one of the hardest questions to answer, and even more so over the Internet because we don't know what you look like.

But we won't just leave you there though, as we know you look to us for the answers to all of your hair problems. So we thought we would attempt to solve this issue in a general way.

Whatever your hair type, you always need to experiment. Whether you're a top stylist, or like most of us, just want to look your best, nothing beats experimentation. Mix two products together, like a gel and a mousse, try out different ranges and brands and don't forget that the shampoo and conditioner you use also make a big difference to the success of your styling. Personally I'm using a gel mixed with a gloss right now to get control and shine from my curls.

Don't get stuck in a rut. Your hair changes throughout the year and after every cut or chemical process you put it through. Don't expect to go home to the same can of mousse and achieve the style that your hairdresser just created for you! Make sure you check out what they used and how they used it in the salon. If you can't get the results they did with the products they used then go back and ask why. Remember, that if your hairdresser blow-dried your hair, and you wash and leave it, then the same products won't work.

Finally it is the little things that make all of the difference. How much and how you apply it really does mean the difference between success and failure with a style. Generally, you can always add more but if you put too much in then you will have to wash it out before it will work! Applying something all in one spot also does not help as you will never be able to spread it throughout your hair. Make sure all products are applied evenly by combing through or working gel or what ever you use, around your whole palm before adding to your hair.

We also went out and asked some of the top hairdressers what their personal tips were that they thought made the difference:

Tracey Hughes @ Mieka Hairdressing in Melbourne suggests "learn to work with what you've got naturally, this will make your life a lot easier".

Adam Noble @ Next Hair in Canberra had a tip for those of us with wavy or curly hair: "if you want to control the curl more or get a less frizzy result. Take your chosen product and smooth your hair through with it on your palms then push the curls back into your hair with your fingers".

Shannon Treloar also @ Next feels "If you're going to spend the time and money on a cut and colour, do the same on the products to keep your hair at its best".
