The 2008 Australian Hair Fashion Awards held on Monday 17 March 2008 at The Westin Sydney was a night of glitz and glamour for the hair and fashion industries. Hairstylists, make-up artists, photographers and designers, who are at the peak of their careers, were all there to check out what their peers were up to.

If you ever thought a hairdresser didn't know how 'to do it in style' then this night would prove you wrong. It was like the Oscars with limo after limo and even the Hummer version of a limo dropping off VIP's at the door, the crowd was without a doubt the best dressed in Sydney and with both local and international stars of the hair world doing what they do best.

Akin Konizi from 'hob' salons in the UK was working away on the entertainment for the night .The Frets, Steve Terry international and hair super star to celebs such as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears (don't know whether that's a claim to hair fame or not) was keeping a close eye on all that happens in the Australian industry amongst rumors of a planned return to the land of his birth and some new business ideas. Brisbane hairdresser Darcey Stratford was doing the honors for the the Veronicas who were there to present the main award of the night and local boy Emiliano Vitale of eSalon was busy creating master pieces for the beauty editors.

Like all other events of this type across all industries they serve a great purpose for the rest of the industry and those wanting the latest looks, they provide a focus and reason to create the images that will grace the pages of not only this magazine but many around the world and to therefore inspire us.

These images were judged in London by a panel of prestigious UK hairdressers including Errol Douglas, Terry Calvert, Richard Thompson, Sean Dawson, Andy Smith, Anthony Licata, Gary France and Steve Terry, comments included that the photographic collections captured what's hot in current hair fashion trends.

The big winner on the night was Robert Bava of Parlour Hair in South Australia who was named the 2008 Australian Hair Fashion Awards (AHFA) Australian Hairdresser of the Year. Owner of three salons in Adelaide he is renowned for his beautiful photographic images, but this is the first time that they have given him this converted title. Bava has twice been named South Australian Hairdresser of the Year in the past and his wife Karen Bava has in the past won numerous awards herself making this a formidable hairdressing team. However they are not just keeping it in the family with protege Jason Fassbender taking out the award as the 2008 AHFAward Apprentice of the Year. This has been his year too with his inclusion in the Fame Team (an AHJ initiative which helps to launch rising stars in the hairdressing industry on a path to stardom through a mentoring type program).

So as a team the Palour Hair Studio guys really were the big winners on the night and from these images you can see why:

Also showing their strength in the Australian hairdressing industry were Toni&Guy, who under the leadership of Denis Langford continue to go from strength to strength. Toni&Guy may be the Worlds largest hairdressing chain but their presents on the honor roll at international awards has lessened over the years but it is very much alive in Australia. Taking out the Artistic team award shows the strength of the group as a hole adding to that Jacen Wards Creative Colourist title is stunning for a salon group who have always struggled to promote this side of the hairdressing craft but when you note that in the not too distant past Robert Bava and the guys at Parlour Hair Studio were Toni&Guy salons there influence at these awards is a credit to all and the training culture they have in place.
