Australian Flying Doctor Service kept in the air by hairdressers

Most people have heard of the world famous Australian Flying Doctor Service and vital organisations like this exist because of public donations and support from big business so it was an honour on June the 3rd for the Virtualhaircare Team to be flown out to country Australia as a guest of Australian hairdressing chain Just Cuts, a sponsor of the Australian Outback Car Trek 2006.

How is he going to explain this to the wife?

This 16 year old bush touring charity event pits man and car against the unforgiving Australian bush in an epic journey across some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world. The trip covers an incredible 3685 kilometres in just 7 days. All proceeds go to one of the most worthy charities in Australia .

The event has its roots in supporting the world famous Royal Australian Flying Doctor Service who’s airstrips dot major highways and isolated communities across Australia’s vast expanses. Australian hairdressing chain Just Cuts and its stylists have raised over $200,000 for the charity since 1998 and this year sponsored the annual “Cut-a-rama’ where 11 Just Cuts staff styled over 200 of the trekkers hair to raise money for the iconic Australian charity.

“Everyone looks forward to this event for months beforehand” says Denis McFadden, Just Cuts Managing Director. “Most of the guys start growing their hair and beards in late February”.

Participants arrived from as far away as England and New Zealand and many of the team are on their eight or ninth year of the event which has become vital to keeping the Flying Doctors in the air as well as a chance for some challenging fun.

We needed to choose a charity that related to every state and territory” says McFadden. The event, which sees substantial donations to the RFDS from the ‘trekkers’, has been running since 1990.
