MEN'S HAIR SPECIAL FEATURE
It’s all about the hair- and the right product, of course
By Anna Deutsch
Men’s hair care has come a long way from generic pomades and dandruff shampoos. While some guys still use whatever their girlfriend keeps in the shower (if they use anything at all), many modern men have discovered the world of men’s hair care products.
The industry of men’s hair care is ever expanding, and guys are taking notice. Men are starting to realize that it isn’t simply their shoes or shirt that completes their look, but their hair- for better or for worse. As men understand this, they are feeling more comfortable branching out when it comes to products. Men’s products aren’t just for the super hip and savvy; they are for the every day man.
It’s never been easier to achieve the sexy “messy” look, or maintain more classic, clean cuts. Products are being made for specific hair types geared toward achieving specific styles. Don’t be a slave to that one jar of hair gel that sits on your bathroom sink, the product should work for you. It is also important to understand that shampoo makes a difference as well. It can affect your grooming by hindering or enhancing the role of your styling product. So don’t just reach for that bar of soap or ancient bottle of shampoo; find a shampoo and conditioner that works for your hair and it’ll make styling that much easier. And don't be afraid to spend a little bit more on a product that you like. Professional products are applied in small amounts to your hair and will last a while, making them worth the money.
When it comes to men’s hair, few things are still taboo for men. Celebrities like Jude Law and Brad Pitt have fun experimenting with hair color (Brad was super blond when he was with Jennifer Anniston and then went dark for Angelina Jolie). And rockers don’t just wake up with that perfectly messy hair- they invest in products that enhance the appearance they want. Don’t be afraid to play around and create the look that you want.
Men-specific brands have been popping up all over the place throughout the past two years. Redken For Men launched in Australia nearly two years ago making a splash in the men’s grooming market. They have a dynamic line-up of shampoos, a conditioner, and styling products each with their own identities, so men can find exactly what they need. Mark Harman, Redken For Men’s Australian based Product Manager, notes the appearance of the hair as integral to a man’s personal grooming. “There’s little doubt that hair is the ultimate fashion accessory. It’s the most impactful thing a man can alter to improve his appearance,” said Harman in the September/October InStyle Magazine. He went on to explain that men develop a strong personal affinity to their styling products and see them as critical to their self-image. That’s why it is important to experiment and find what is right for you, instead of settling for your same old look.
And don’t forget, it’s essential to remember where it all begins: the right hair cut. No matter what product you have, your hair is the foundation. Make sure you get a cut that suits your face and personal style. Browse through our picture gallery of the latest trends to get ideas for something that will work for you.
